Artist Description of the Event
“The idea is to chart the musical life of Paris from 1928 – 1945 through the eyes of the great Poulenc, who was alternately and equally interested in the city’s nightlife, church life and expression through the highest of high art. From the roaring, carefree jazz age, into the instability of the depression and the increasing awareness of the surrounding rise of fascism in Italy (to the east), then Spain (to the west) then Germany. Poulenc lived in Paris through it all, and his music (and the music of other Parisian greats) reflects a great society living next to an increasingly menacing and aggressive power, while still maintaining its own character and, as Poulenc did, ultimately surviving and prevailing.”

« L’idée est de retracer la vie musicale de Paris de 1928 à 1945 à travers le regard du grand Poulenc, qui s’intéressait tour à tour et avec le même enthousiasme à la vie nocturne de la ville, à sa vie religieuse et à l’expression artistique la plus élevée. Des années folles, vibrantes et insouciantes, à l’instabilité de la Dépression et à la prise de conscience croissante de la montée du fascisme en Italie (à l’est), puis en Espagne (à l’ouest), puis en Allemagne. Poulenc a vécu à Paris à travers toutesces périodes, et sa musique, ainsi que celle d’autres grands compositeurs parisiens, reflète une grande société vivant aux côtés d’une puissance de plus en plus menaçante et agressive, tout en conservant son propre caractère et, comme Poulenc lui-même, en survivant et en triomphant finalement. »
