Jean-Willy Kunz is the organist in residence of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. In addition to playing both with the Orchestra and in recital, he sees to the development and showcasing of Casavant’s op. 3900 installed at the Maison symphonique in Montréal.
Jean-Willy Kunz has premiered numerous pieces for organ and orchestra, and for solo organ, by Tod Machover, John Rea, Samy Moussa, Maxime Goulet, and others. A highlight among his many solo performances at the Maison symphonique was a recital presented in 2017 in collaboration with NASA, during which a live audio-video duplex with an astronaut aboard the International Space Station allowed for the first ever Earth-Space organ duet.
His interest and versatility in different styles of music are reflected in the various projects he has been involved with for several years, and which shed new light on the pipe organ, including jazz music in a duo with Branford Marsalis, pop music with Rufus Wainwright, and stage music with the Cirque du Soleil. His discography includes 15 recordings which reflect the broad range of his musical influences: a solo organ album, Impressions with the jazz ensemble InSpirations, a 2016 Juno-awarded album with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and many more.
Jean-Willy Kunz studied with Louis Robilliard and with Mireille Lagacé, before completing a doctorate in organ performance at McGill University with John Grew. He is an organ professor at the Conservatory of Music in Montréal and artistic director of the Canadian International Organ Competition.
Jean-Willy Kunz est l’organiste en résidence de l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. En plus de jouer avec l’Orchestre ainsi qu’en récital, il assure le développement et la mise en valeur du Grand Orgue Pierre-Béique de l’OSM, opus 3900 de Casavant Frères, installé dans la Maison symphonique de Montréal.
Jean-Willy Kunz a créé plusieurs œuvres pour orgue et orchestre ainsi que pour orgue seul des compositeurs Tod Machover, John Rea, Samy Moussa, Maxime Goulet, et d’autres. Parmi ses nombreuses prestations en solo à la Maison symphonique, citons un récital présenté en 2017 en collaboration avec la NASA, au cours duquel un duplex audio-vidéo en direct avec un astronaute à bord de la Station spatiale internationale a permis de réaliser le tout premier duo d’orgues Terre-Espace.
Grâce à son intérêt pour différents styles musicaux, Jean-Willy Kunz s’implique dans de nombreux projets qui apportent un nouveau regard sur l’orgue, notamment du jazz en duo avec Branford Marsalis, de la pop avec Rufus Wainwright, et de la musique de scène avec le Cirque du Soleil. Sa discographie comprend 15 enregistrements qui reflètent le large éventail de ses influences musicales : un album d’orgue solo, Impressions avec l’ensemble de jazz InSpirations, un album récompensé par un Prix Juno en 2016 avec l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, et bien d’autres encore.
Jean-Willy Kunz a étudié avec Louis Robilliard et Mireille Lagacé, avant d’obtenir un doctorat en orgue de l’université McGill, où il a étudié avec John Grew. Il est professeur d’orgue au Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, ainsi que directeur artistique du Concours international d’orgue du Canada.
