Scotland

Scotland is famous for a great many things. Its mountains and lakes, wildlife and whisky, tartans, clans, battles, and even the nuisance of its flying midges. But this magical northern land should be just as famous for its music. Scotland has an ancient and beautiful musical life which this programme sets out to explore. It’s a heritage that includes folk music – lost songs of the Highlands and Islands in Scotland’s several languages and dialects. It’s a heritage that includes glorious choral polyphony written and sung in the castles and chapels of 16th-century Scottish kings, including the music of Robert Carver (c.1485 – c.1570). It also includes the rich seam of contemporary music being written by famous and innovative Scottish composers of today like Sir James MacMillan (b.1959). And that’s not to mention the great Scottish singers and songwriters of today, who top charts around the world.

By collecting all of this together in one place, we hope to see how Scotland’s dramatic history has created a musical legacy which is as deep, rich and magical as the landscape itself.

Écosse

L’Écosse est célèbre pour beaucoup de choses. Ses montagnes et ses lacs, sa faune et son whisky, ses tartans, ses clans, ses batailles et même ses moucherons nuisibles.

Mais cette terre magique du nord devrait être tout aussi célèbre pour sa musique. L’Écosse possède une vie musicale ancienne et magnifique que ce programme se propose d’explorer. C’est un patrimoine qui comprend la musique folk, ces chansons perdues des Highlands et des îles, dans les différentes langues et dialectes de l’Écosse. C’est un héritage qui comprend la glorieuse polyphonie chorale écrite et chantée dans les châteaux et les chapelles des rois écossais du XVIe siècle, notamment la musique de Robert Carver (vers 1485 – vers 1570). Il comprend également la riche veine de musique contemporaine écrite par des compositeurs écossais célèbres et innovants d’aujourd’hui, comme Sir James MacMillan (né en 1959). Sans oublier les grands chanteurs et compositeurs écossais d’aujourd’hui, qui sont en tête des classements mondiaux. En rassemblant tout cela en un seul endroit, nous espérons montrer comment l’histoire dramatique de l’Écosse a créé un héritage musical aussi profond, riche et magique que le paysage lui-même.
