Passion Play | La Passion – Matthew Larkin
Passion Play (2023) is a choral-orchestral cantata on the narrative attributed to St. John (written c. 95 AD), and with a libretto based thereupon by Matthew Larkin (also featuring prosaic writing and poetry by Anna Akhmatova, John Donne, Phineas Fletcher, George Herbert, and others). The work follows three distinct traditions: the Chester Mystery Plays of 15th century England (these were pieces of theatre which dramatised certain events in the Christian calendar, banned for several centuries due to accusations of « Popery »); the Oberammergau Passion Plays (offered every ten years in Bavaria since 1633); and the Passion Oratorio (chiefly popularized by German masters Buxtehude and Bach in the 17th and 18th centuries). The work was composed in winter 2023 and performed twice that year by Caelis Academy Ensemble, to whom it is dedicated. Combining choral and orchestral texture with art song, Caelis will offer a concert reading of the revised score.
Passion Play (2023) est une cantate chorale et orchestrale inspirée du récit attribué à Saint Jean (écrit vers 95 après J.-C.) et dont le livret a été rédigé par Matthew Larkin (avec des textes en prose et des poèmes d’Anna Akhmatova, John Donne, Phineas Fletcher, George Herbert et d’autres). L’œuvre s’inscrit dans trois traditions distinctes : les Chester Mystery Plays de l’Angleterre du XVe siècle (pièces de théâtre mettant en scène certains événements du calendrier chrétien, interdites pendant plusieurs siècles en raison d’accusations de « papisme ») ; les Passion Plays d’Oberammergau (présentés tous les dix ans en Bavière depuis 1633) ; et le Passion Oratorio (principalement popularisé par les maîtres allemands Buxtehude et Bach aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles). L’œuvre a été composée pendant l’hiver 2023 et interprétée deux fois cette année-là par le Caelis Academy Ensemble, auquel elle est dédiée. Combinant texture chorale et orchestrale avec des mélodies, Caelis proposera une lecture-concert de la partition révisée.
