Music and Film / Musique et film:
Le Chemin des Juifs

July 13 | 17:00 EDT Ottawa Art Gallery  Alma Duncan Salon $15 – $70
Le Chemin des Juifs :  A Survivor’s Journey (feature documentary, dur: 65 mins)
The indelible testimonial of the late Ottawa resident, David Shentow, a WWII immigrant and Holocaust survivor, lies at the heart of the film’s remarkable journey that begins in 1942 on le Chemin des juifs, a forgotten road in Northern France. Filmed on location in France, Belgium, Canada and the UK, Le Chemin des Juifs is a valuable and vivid document reliving one of the darkest periods of history; yet it is a story which inspires us all as a celebration of the power of the human spirit.
The event will include a unique live performance of the original film score, composed by renown film composers Patrick Savage and Holeg Spies.  Notable international violinist and film director, Daniel Bhattacharya will be performing with the quintet.
This special performance celebrates the release of “Le Chemin Des Juifs” on Amazon streaming platforms in July 2019.

About the film:

The compelling testimony of David Shentow – Canadian WWII immigrant and Holocaust survivor – lies at the heart of a remarkable journey that begins in 1942 on le Chemin des Juifs, a forgotten road in Northern France. Filmed on location in France, Belgium, Canada and the UK, Le Chemin des Juifs is a valuable and vivid document reliving one of the darkest periods of history; yet it is a story which inspires us all as a celebration of the power of the human spirit. As one of the only living survivors to bear witness to a little known chapter of WWII Holocaust history, Davids eloquent and raw testimonial is and accompanied by expert interviews, new / archive footage, and the powerful original score composed by renown composers Holeg & Spies.

About the music:

Patrick Savage (composer Holeg & Spies) : The Suite from “Le Chemin des Juifs” was written in advance of receiving the film itself, and was developed from the director’s clear concept for the sound of the score – a still, almost ghostly blend of organ and muted strings. We hoped to create a score which would be lamenting and reflective, with something of the quiet dignity we witnessed in David. In contrast to the unimaginable horror of his words, he told his story simply.  Seeking to create music to commemorate such an overwhelmingly tragic, horrific chapter in the history of humanity was a humbling task. Ultimately our best hope is that the music can communicate a fraction of what is unsayable, and to be grateful that David Shentow’s words were recorded for future generations to hear.
