Come and join us for Music and Beyond’s Kids’ Music and Arts Day. This fun filled free event will encourage children and their families to explore classical music and the arts in ways that are engaging and fun.

Music and Beyond will present over 200 short musical performances featuring music from around the world. We will present these events at various locations at the University of Ottawa. Families will be able to participate in workshops and demonstrations. These free workshops will include instrument demonstrations by a number of key musicians, music games, art classes, dance, and much more. A special highlight of the day will be the chance to play on an incredible walking piano, as featured in the 1988 film ‘BIG’.

Music and Beyond is known for its innovative approach to providing young people with creative and artistic experiences. In linking music and youth, we will be highlighting the important benefits music has on mathematical ability, learning skills and creativity. Studies have shown that exposure to music and music lessons early in life has a positive effect on brain development and motor skills. The Kids’ Music and Arts Day will also be an opportunity for families to explore their creativity together and learn about music in a fun and festive environment.

We expect the Kids’ Music and Arts Day to be one of the most memorable events of Music and Beyond 2013. Its broad appeal will resonate with children, families, and older adults who wish to go beyond in their exploration of music. We look forward to seeing many people come out to this wonderful event!

Music and Beyond 2013 summer festival lineup announced!

Menahem Pressler, Stewart Goodyear, Isabel Bayrakdarian among world-class performers coming to the Ottawa area.

Ottawa, May 3, 2013 – The lineup of performers for the 2013 Music and Beyond summer festival has been released. The festival will take place from July 4 to 15, bringing to the Ottawa area such world-class musicians and performers as Germany’s Auryn Quartet; soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian; the Vienna Piano Trio; and many others. As well, this year’s festival will include a special emphasis on activities for children and youth that highlight the importance of music education early in life. A special Kids’ Music and Arts Day will be held on July 7 featuring over 150 concerts and many exciting activities to encourage young people to discover classical music. Juno-winning Canadian singer-songwriter Sam Roberts, also a classically-trained violinist, will make a very special appearance on violin as part of this day. A Music and Nature event will also be held on July 10 at the Canadian Museum of Nature, featuring over 120 concerts and encouraging children and their families to explore the museum while learning about music.

Another exciting initiative for 2013 is the inclusion of Festival by Request in partnership with CBC Radio. Listeners will be able to suggest programming for Music and Beyond including musicians, repertoires, and specific pieces of music they wish to hear. The winning entries will be presented as the festival’s ending gala, and winners will be provided with travel, accommodation, and passes to attend Music and Beyond.

Music and Beyond 2013 also includes an updated visual look. Award-winning Ottawa hyperrealist painter Sheryl Luxenburg created a very special painting, entitled ‘A Take on Mozart’, exclusively for the Music and Beyond. This intricate, photorealistic work took two months to complete using the pointillist technique, which involves laying hundreds of thousands of tiny dots of different coloured paint side by side in order to create an image. Sheryl’s astounding work will be featured in all the 2013 festival branding including posters, programs, and passes.
